There is a lot in this world that is chaotic and out of my control. My style inside my home is still in my control. Well, most of my home is in my control. With three other people living in my home, I can really control about 1/4 of my home style. My teenagers embrace total chaos, in every form, in every part of their being. Thus, looking at their bedrooms or their bathroom can and will short circuit my brain. It is the singular time that my brain allows me to dissociate from this timeline, such is the trauma that the chaos brings.
I love how southwestern style embraces rustic aesthetic and lends a sense of tranquility. I love turquoise, copper and leather and playing with the colors and the textures. It's warm and comforting. Throw in some mesquite furniture and I am in heaven.
I love collecting things as well. It is a maximalist style that I lean towards. I love finding vintage things at a thrift store, such as glasswork, art, or anything that catches my eye. I love adding a decorative touch. I could learn to use a little restraint. Only looking for specific colors or style. Or perhaps, a nice piece of mesquite furniture.
My sister, God bless her, is a minimalist. She loves just a few decorative touches and a clean look. That is her way of life. My husband does love the look of minimalism. A room with nothing but a piano is classy and has an obvious purpose. My family lacks the ability to maintain a minimalist lifestyle. The execution is our downfall. Maybe, we lack the vision.
Whether you love to collect vintage finds or houseplants, keeping a clear idea of where you would put these items before you purchase them may help keep your home from feeling cluttered. That, and having plenty of shelves and other display spots. And when in doubt, Marie Kondo that stuff. Hold it close and ask yourself if it brings you joy. If it does, keep it and find it a permanent home. If it doesn't, put it back on the shelf and keep moving.
